Gertie and Ruth was created in 2016 to support those affected by domestic and family violence. We wanted to raise some funds and see what else we could do in the way of support. We started selling tea cosies which had been handmade by Ann, using beautiful sustainable and cruelty free wools. The tea cosies were a huge success and started our fundraising.
We then started collecting interesting items to sell. We found them for free on Gumtree, we collected them from council clean ups and some amazing organisations donated lots of wonderful things. In the end, we were able to raise over $5,000.
We thought that we could collect some clothes for the refuges and created a Facebook group called 'ToGatherings'. With just 69 members, we received literally mountains of clothes which were all sorted and boxed to go to the Marnja Jarndu refuge in Broome, very generously shipped for free by DHL and StarTrack.
We've started our fundraising again and hope to be able to provide some support to the amazing organisations that are there for vulnerable people.
You may be interested in the name of our site. Gertie and Ruth were my grandmothers and Ann is my mother (the amazing knitter who made our beautiful tea cosies) who all had their own challenges.
