Australian War Memorial www.awm.gov.au/ This is a wonderful war memorial with extensive exhibits. Entry is free. The road leading up to the Memorial is also lined with various sculptures which are easy to stop and look at. There is the memorial wall of names where you can place a poppy for someone you know (there is a small cost for the poppy) and some great displays of machines inside and outside the Memorial.
Royal Australian Mint www.ramint.gov.au/ Here you can watch the automated factory producing coins for Australia and other countries. There is a great viewing area with large glass windows where you can see the robots. You can also see some of the original machinery used to make the currency. Entry is free.
Other free things There are a lot of other free things to do in Canberra some of which we have done ourselves (but didn't have photos we could put up because they have other people in them and we're not publishing those for privacy reasons) and some of which we still want to do:
National Museum of Australia - www.nma.gov.au/about_us. This is a really lovely space with some great interactive activities for children. Entry is free.
New Parliament House -www.aph.gov.au/. Our current Parliament House. Entry is free.
Museum of Australian Democracy (Old Parliament House) - moadoph.gov.au/visiting/. This is not free but the charge is small. At November 2016, it was $2 per adult and $1 per child, $5 for a family.
National Gallery of Australianga.gov.au/. Entry to the Gallery is free, usually the special exhibitions have a charge.
Lake Burley Griffin - www.nationalcapital.gov.au/index.php/education/self-guided-tours/lake-burley-griffin-walk. This is a lovely man-made lake named after the architect of Canberra. It is beautiful to drive (or walk or bike) around but you can also have a picnic on the shores of the Lake. There are various landmarks around the Lake or visible from the Lake. The Captain Cook Memorial Jet in the Lake sends up a jet of water at various times which is great!
National Library of Australia - www.nla.gov.au/. Entry is free.
National Portrait Gallery - www.portrait.gov.au/. Entry is free, special exhibitions will usually have a charge.
National Archives of Australia - www.naa.gov.au/. Entry is free.
National Film and Sound Archives - www.nfsa.gov.au/. Entry is free.
Questacon www.questacon.edu.au/visiting This is not free to visit, but there is a free weekend in June each year. It is a great museum and the children really love it.
