Parkes www.csiro.au/en/Research/Facilities/ATNF/Parkes-radio-telescope/Parkes-Observatory-Visitors-Centre If you've watched The Dish, you'll love a visit to the Parkes telescope even more. It's worth watching the movie before you visit so that you can see where it was filmed and how amazing the telescope is. Entry to the visitors' centre is free. There is a charge for some of the movies and other activities.
Peak Hill Open Cut Gold Mine www.peakhill.nsw.au/index.php/see-do/gold-mine Peak Hill is a historic gold mining town about 49km north of Parkes. You can walk around the open cut mine site and see old machinery left from the works. Entry is free.
Abercrombie Caves www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/visit-a-park/parks/abercrombie-karst-conservation- Abercrombie Caves are about one hour south of Bathurst. They are rugged and dramatic and, we thought, really spectacular. As you can see from the photos there is lovely bush around the caves as well and you may see kangaroos as we did when we saw a mother and joey. The suspension bridge is also great and the river is lovely. The entrance fees we thought were reasonable and worth the cost. At November 2016, it was $83 for 2 adults and 2 children to visit 2 of the caves. But, you could easily just spend time in the area and enjoy a picnic.
